The Role

The Chief Statistician is the chief executive officer of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, responsible for the national statistical programme, the census and the administration of the Bureau.

•Advise the Government and other authorities on statistical programmes at national level •Supervise the administration of the Statistics Act and control operations and staff of the Bureau •Decide how data for statistical purposes are collected, transmitted, processed, compiled and published •Supervise the taking of the census throughout Pakistan through Provincial Census Commissioners •Appraise the quality of all statistics at national level and ensure coordination with other statistical agencies •Ensure a high level of professionalism of the staff through continuous, high-quality training •Promote, develop and maintain a strong analytical and research capacity within the Bureau •Advise the Government on the use and relevance of available statistics for specific policy issues •Appraise and allocate technical resources for statistical projects •Develop national statistical standards and promote standardization of concepts and definitions conforming to international standards •Prepare annual and five-year work plans, progress reports and budgets for the Bureau
